Every person has the right to a standard of living adequate for their health and wellbeing – including food, clothing, housing, medical care and necessary social services.
Your right to Medicare
• You can independently obtain a Medicare card at 15 years of age. A card is not automatically issued – you must apply.
• To apply for a Medicare card you need two forms of identification such a birth certificate or a bankbook. You can apply at a Medicare office and they will give you a Medicare number over the counter and then send you the card. You can ask that the card be sent to another address if you are concerned about privacy.
Your right to Privacy
• If you are 12 years of age or over you can see your doctor independently. Your doctor is not allowed to give out information about you without your permission.
• Your doctor must keep what you say to them confidential unless:
1. You told them you were going to seriously harm or kill yourself;
2. You were thinking about injuring/harming someone else; or
3. Someone else is physically harming you or sexually abusing you.
Your right to Contraception and Abortion
• If you are 16 years of age or more you can give your own consent to the doctor for contraception.
• If you are 14 years of age and the doctor believes you can give informed consent, then they are able to prescribe contraception or perform an abortion without the permission of the parent or guardian.
• If you are under 14 years of age, your doctor must establish that you are able to give informed consent and some health workers may want to ask your guardian’s permission. If this is a problem for you, contact a youth health service or try another medical service.
