Part of being responsible for yourself is taking care of your mental health...

Your mental health is how you think and feel about yourself and how you deal with life’s challenges.
There are ways that you can support your mental health:
1. Get the right amount of sleep. There are 24 hours in a day. If you think of your main activities in the day – work, rest and play – that is 8 hours for each. A good balance.
2. Keep active. Exercise releases natural endorphins that can elevate your mood. Find an exercise that you love. Try to exercise at least half an hour each day. Check out <Exercising> for more ideas.
3. Eat well. Without going too much into the chemistry of it, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for the proper functioning of your brain and nervous system, that is the whole system that is supporting your mental health. Eating well can make you happier and healthier. True! It will even make you smarter and give you more energy to pour into the life you want to live. Check out <Nutrition >for ideas to inspire your good eating.
4. Talk to people you trust. If you are having a hard time, talking to someone you trust can make you feel better immediately. They may not have the solution, but talking does help.
5. Don’t rely on tea, coffee and alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol can increase feelings of anxiety and depression. So less is best.
6. Avoid nicotine and drugs. Imagine that your nervous system is a complicated system of ropes and pulleys and that abuse of any drug can actually fray the ends of those ropes until – you guessed it – you snap! Ouch. Do yourself a favour and avoid nicotine and drugs whenever you can.
7. Seek help. If you are finding it difficult to be a friend to yourself or to deal with feelings of anxiety or depression there are many professional support services that can help you. You will find numbers to Call: on this page.
REMEMBER: YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH WILL BENEFIT IF YOU MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES FOR YOURSELF.
The thoughts you think, the food you eat and what you do with your body directly affect your mental and physical health.
