For an idea of the jobs that are being advertised and to find out what skills you might need to learn to get the job you want, check out newspapers and internet job sites.
If you can’t find the job you are looking for or if you do know the kind of work that you want, you can approach employers directly. Send them your resume or call them to ask if they have any jobs available.
Even if you’ve decided on the type of job you want, you might want advice on interview skills, job searching or increasing your experience through volunteering. School and TAFE careers advisors can help, or visit the websites listed.
Where to look?
Where to look? Start by standing still. The closer your work is, the less time spent travelling to and from work.
Look at some of your favourite places. Shops. Libraries. Cinemas. Would you like to work there?
Did you realise that most jobs for young people are never advertised in the papers? That they are gained by stepping up and asking? If you are a foodie, you may want to work in the local deli.
If you are a couch potato, you may be sitting on a a lot of knowledge about movies and you might be a great asset to a VIDEO SHOP.
If you love riding a bike, how about a bike shop?
Love fast cars? Can't afford them? How about working with cars in some way?
Great shopper? Why not work in a shop?
The work you do could be something you love to do!
