About Us

Shar Double
Position: State Coordinator

About Shar:
Kia Ora,  You guessed it I am from New Zealand. I relocated to WA in Nov 2010 after visiting a year earlier and thought what a wonderful place to live and it hasn’t disappointed me.
What I bring to CREATE is partly my Social Work degree and the rest is pure passion for Advocacy for Young People. I believe that Young People have a voice and it’s a great opportunity to get heard through CREATE.
We have a awesome team here in the WA office and we welcome all Young People in care to come and say hi. What also makes us a unique office is that we have 1 Australian, 1 South African and a Kiwi so you can imagine we are rugby fans!
And one last word from me…I have a sense of humour like no other and I love to smile. I look forward to my role as State Co-coordinator for many years to come.

Josie McRandal
Position: Community Facilitator

About Josie:
My name is Josie and I really enjoy my role as a community facilitator for Create. Past studies and work experience with children in care has inspired me to be passionate about young people and I love promoting opportunities that connect and empower. I’m a huge believer that you need to celebrate the small wins along with the big ones. I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, reading and eating good food. Being a mum I love family gatherings. Camping is my favourite getaway. I try to work off the good food by doing ZUMBA which is a great fun way to exercise.

Lee Thorpe
Position: Community Facilitator

About Lee:
My name is Lee and have recently started work as a community facilitator at CREATE WA. I have almost 10 years experience as an outdoor instructor, running various outdoor activities for young people from a broad range of backgrounds. Recently i have had experience running training courses for young people aiming to get back into employment and education and bring to CREATE a passion for increasing the inner confidence of young people. Outside of work, I enjoy getting away from the city and going mountain biking, white water kayaking amongst other outdoor activities. When annual leave does come around, travelling is high on my list of priorities.

Charter of Rights for Children and Young People in Care

The Charter of Rights sets out the rights of all children and young people in care in this state.  The Charter talks about what you can expect from people who look after you and work with you while you are in care. If you feel like your rights are not being met, you should talk to an adult you trust like your carer or caseworker, or call the numbers listed on the Charter of Rights. You could also try calling CREATE in your state on 1800 655 105 to talk about your options. Some useful links:

Young Consultants

Young Consultants are young people aged 14 and over who have had a care experience. They work alongside CREATE to share with others in the community what it is like to be in care. Young Consultants go to conferences, consultations, forums and events to represent CREATE and young people in care. To become a young consultant you need to complete Young Consultants Training.

Young Consultants also get a few perks. They can participate in connection activities like trips to the movies and professional development courses including things like Senior First Aid, interview skills, budgeting and building a resume all of which Young Consultants can access for free.

Young Consultants Training
To become a Young Consultant you need to undertake the Young Consultant’s Training Course which is a fun training workshop. You can hang out with other young people, develop skills in presentation and public speaking and learn all about the Care system. Young Consultants training may lead to opportunities to do some occasional paid work with CREATE in through representation at conferences, consultations, forums and events and providing training support.

The next WA young consulants’ training will be coming up in November 2010. More details will be released closer to the date.

CREATE W.A launched the program on the 28th December with great support from all key stakeholders and Creative Voyce.  Great fun was had as everyone made their mark by leaving a painted handprint on the wall.
